Confronting Anti-Blackness: A Reading List
The Conscious Kid shared 6 books that support young Black people’s self-esteem and helps to change the narrative. This reading list is for kids aged 0-18, and we highly recommend purchasing these books for white children too!
According to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center of Education, only 10 percent of children’s books featured black characters in 2018, while 27 percent of them featured animals or other characters who aren’t human. Literally more children’s books are published about animals than Black people each year.
Why does this matter? Historically, Black people have been underrepresented (and misrepresented) in children’s literature. According to the Conscious Kid, this eliminates the opportunity for both white and Black children to “see positive narratives and images of Blackness. All kids should know Black history and Black kids just being: experiencing joy, being loved, and existing in their full humanity.”
We recommend purchasing these books from these Black-owned bookstores.
